Long Island, New York, animal rescuer John Debacker is always ready to help a furry friend in need. When he recently received a call about an abandoned rabbit spotted in his area, he didn’t hesitate to race to the scene.

All About Rabbits Rescue had been trying to catch the domesticated bunny for months, ever since he’d been deserted off a local road. But time after time, the scared animal evaded them, scampering away into the wilderness. When they eventually spotted him wandering through a suburban area, they knew that time was of the essence. They needed an expert. Luckily, Debacker was only a phone call away.

Upon arrival, Debacker eyed the rabbit rustling through the bushes in a garden lining one of the homes. He arranged a group of pens in a half circle around the area. Once the setup was in place, Debacker approached the rabbit from the opposite side and ushered him into the pens, quickly closing the wire walls and safely containing him.

You can watch the rescue unfold in a video here:

Debacker noticed the friendly rabbit was suffering from fly strike, a serious skin condition that can be fatal. He took the bunny to an experienced foster carer, who treated the rabbit and gave him a safe place to recover.

Once he’s ready, the rabbit will be available for adoption through All About Rabbits Rescue.

The rescuer is so glad that he was able to save this rabbit from a dangerous life in the wild.

“It was a great feeling knowing that his life only gets better from here,” he told The Dodo.
