The display is one of the most important parts of Apple’s upcoming iPhone Fold, and also one of the most complex, as the company has been reported to be developing a ‘crease less’ panel that will stand out from the competition. Luckily, a new rumor claims that the Cupertino giant has not only finalized this component, but its supply chain partner, Foxconn, has arranged an assembly line for this part. Unfortunately, the hinge and battery are yet to be completely prepared for mass production.

Despite being tested with a battery capacity that is larger than the cell on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple has yet to secure a supplier for the iPhone Fold

For several months, Samsung has been mentioned as the sole manufacturer of the iPhone Fold’s primary and cover display. According to previous specifications, the dimensions of the OLED are said to measure 7.74 inches, with the cover display measuring 5.49 inches diagonally. Keep in mind that these details are for the prototype version, so actual specifications can change once the iPhone Fold officially enters mass production.

Unfortunately, that might not happen anytime soon because, according to a Weibo tipster whose machine translation name is ‘Momentary Digital,’ the iPhone Fold’s display might be finalized, but the hinge and battery remain out of this loop. Based on a multitude of reports, the hinge mechanism has given Apple the most trouble and is said to sport a liquid metal material that supposedly offers resistance against bending.

Display and assembly process of the iPhone Fold has been finalized, but other components

Fortunately, the trillion-dollar titan has successfully overcome this hurdle and has also managed to reduce the component’s price to between $70 and $80. The latest rumor does not confirm the specific problem Apple is facing, as it is apprehensive about placing the hinge on the mass production line. However, the company has yet to finalize a battery supplier as well.

Even though the iPhone Fold is said to be tested with a capacity in the 5,400mAh-5,800mAh range, Apple will be exercising stringent quality control since there are going to be a ton of moving parts inside this device. Even a single deviation of these components or extra pressure from bending or pressing the iPhone Fold could result in the battery getting punctured.

Assuming you believe that the battery problem is not a widespread issue, you are correct on that front, but look at Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold when it found its way into the hands of prolific stress tester JerryRigEverything. The device suffered a catastrophic failure that involved the battery going up in flames, and we can all agree that this is an outcome Apple wants to steer clear of. Perhaps we shall learn more about the company’s plans in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for further updates.
