Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Andrés Cubas recently lived a moment we all fear: misplacing your passport before a big trip.

The 29-year-old was called up to play for Paraguay’s men’s national team for their November international window. The call-up came shortly after Paraguay qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Unfortunately for Cubas, he was unable to participate in the international match for an extremely unusual reason. No, he wasn’t injured, nor did he show up late to a flight. Instead, he forgot his passport in a pair of pants, which were then put into the wash.

“It got screwed up, he forgot it in the pants. And well, the lady who works there didn’t notice either, and they put it in the washing machine,” Cubas’ father, Francisco Cubas, said in Spanish to Cardinal Deportivo [translated with Google Translate].

Andrés Cubas no pudo sumarse a la Selección Paraguaya para la reciente tanda de amistosos, y el motivo es, cuanto menos, particular 🤦‍♂️

Cubas missed Saturday’s game against the U.S., a game at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, in which they lost 2-1. Given his passport situation, he will also be forced to miss Tuesday’s game versus Mexico at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

You can only imagine how frustrating this ordeal must have been, but Cubas quickly needs to regroup and be ready to play again in a short time. He and his Whitecaps teammates play at BC Place on Saturday, Nov. 22 in the Western Conference semi-final versus Los Angeles FC.

That game will see a record-breaking crowd of more than 53,000 in attendance.
