The Montreal Alouettes have locked up kicker Jose Maltos Diaz with a two-year contract extension, which will keep him with the team through 2027.

The native of Monterrey, Mexico, suited up for 18 regular-season games, both playoff games, and the Grey Cup this season. He broke the single-season franchise field-goal record previously held by David Duval by putting 58 kicks through the uprights, while leading the CFL in points (210) and finishing third in field-goal percentage (89.2 percent).

Maltos Diaz first tried his hand at professional football in 2013, when he briefly signed with the New Orleans Saints. Five years later, he attended training camp with the B.C. Lions, but was released ahead of the 2018 season.

The 34-year-old got another shot when he was selected by the Ottawa Redblacks in the inaugural CFL-LFA Draft in 2019. He is the only player remaining from that cohort in the CFL, having spent three seasons on the practice roster in Ottawa and another on the PR in Montreal before getting his shot mid-way through the 2024 season.

Maltos Diaz has connected on 98-of-110 field goal attempts in his CFL career for an overall accuracy of 89.1 percent. In July, he set an Alouettes’ team record by connecting from 58 yards out.

The Montreal Alouettes finished second in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 10-8 record and beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Final before losing the 112th Grey Cup to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Davis Alexander went 7-0 as a starter during the regular season, though he missed 11 games due to a hamstring injury.

The Alouettes ranked eighth in net offence, first in net defence, and third with a turnover differential of plus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Stevie Scott III with 418 yards, the leading receiver was Tyler Snead with 1,129 yards, and the leading tackler was Darnell Sankey with 103 tackles. Montreal finished sixth in attendance with average crowds of 21,132, which was a 0.8 percent decrease from the previous year.
