The Dallas Mavericks could soon be a loser of their infamous trade again in the coming days.
In February, the Mavericks shocked the NBA world when they sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal for Anthony Davis. Only months after the superstar led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, GM Nico Harrison opted to ship him off to the West Coast, leading to months of turmoil for the once-proud franchise.
While Cooper Flagg’s addition has certainly helped the franchise get back in good graces with the fanbase, that could all change in an instant.
According to a report from ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, Doncic is expected to sign a four-year, $229 million max extension with the Lakers at the conclusion of his Jordan Brand tour. Doncic’s future with the Lakers has been up in the air since he landed on the West Coast, but it appears that he could soon be locked in as a Laker for most of his prime.
At 26 years old, Doncic is still among the youngest superstars in the league and could be among the top players in the NBA for the next decade. That assessment was the main criticism of Dallas’ trade when it happened, and if Doncic signs an extension with the Lakers as he had planned to do with the Mavericks, things will only get worse in Dallas.
The Mavericks are confident in their decision to trade Doncic, but as the superstar prepares to ink a deal and stay in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future, his success as a Laker will only upset Dallas even more.
