Some Vancouver Canucks players made one heck of a gesture before playing the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

One night before the Vancouver Goldeneyes were set to host a historic home opener at the Pacific Coliseum, four Canucks players were spotted wearing jerseys of the city’s new PWHL team.

One of those players was Aatu Räty.

Not only did the Finnish centre rock a jersey to the rink, but he had to track down a Goldeneyes sweater in an unusual way.

“I saw a couple of guys had them in the locker room,” he said. “I asked around and they didn’t have any, so [the team] Ubered one for me today, which is pretty cool.”

So, in case you didn’t know, you can have hockey sweaters sent to your house via an Uber. What a world.

When he entered Rogers Arena, Räty was seen wearing a Michela Cava sweater.

“I love the jerseys, they’re so cool,” he said.

Jake DeBrusk, Kiefer Sherwood, and Kevin Lankinen were the other three Canucks seen wearing Goldeneyes jerseys on Thursday.

For Räty, he had a mission after the game: finding tickets for the Goldeneyes’ home opener on Friday night.

“I hope they still have some tickets,” he said. “We have a day off, so I’m gonna go and watch.”

“I think they have the Finnish national team captain there too,” he said. “I’ve never seen a super high-level women’s game, so I’m definitely interested to see that.”

The Goldeneyes do have one Finnish player, Michelle Karvinen, who captained Finland to a bronze medal at the 2025 World Hockey Championships.

With the Goldeneyes entering their inaugural season as favourites to win a PWHL championship, perhaps there was some hope that their good mojo would rub off on the Canucks.

Instead, Vancouver lost 4-2 to the Dallas Stars. That drops them to 3-6-1 on home ice this season.

For a while, it looked like there could be some good Goldeneyes energy in Rogers Arena. The Canucks were largely the better team against the Stars. But, once again, a couple of defensive breakdowns thwarted what was otherwise a good effort.

“It was probably our best game of the year,” head coach Adam Foote told reporters postgame.

“We frustrated them. In the second period, we pretty much dominated that period.”

Unfortunately, they couldn’t carry that momentum into the third period. Despite outshooting the Stars 25-14 through two periods, Dallas began the third with the advantage on the shot clock.

They outshot Vancouver 7-2 in the final frame before Colin Blackwell buried the eventual game-winning goal after an ill-timed pinch from Tom Willander.

Down a goal, the Canucks only got two more shots on goal before Mikko Rantanen’s jaw-dropping backhand spin-o-rama sealed the victory for Dallas.

Despite the Canucks failing to get much on net in the third until they were down two goals, Foote defended his team’s performance in the final 20 minutes.

“I didn’t have an issue with our third period today,” he said. “We had a mistake, a pass got away from one of our d-men, we have to get it deep there.”

“Even though they pushed, I still didn’t feel like they had much. We gave a breakaway to their guy, a mistake… that doesn’t mean we had a bad third period. I liked our game entirely.”

Third periods have been an Achilles heel for the Canucks this season. They’ve allowed 35 goals in the final frame, the highest total league-wide. No other NHL team has allowed more than 30 third-period goals this season.
