Wildfires, drought, flooding, disappearing shorelines — these are the climate change effects people living in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador are struggling with.Â
It’s also the focus for a week of stories on CBC Radio’s The Signal, starting Nov. 17.
This is our third annual climate week on The Signal — five days of local climate coverage, happening as tens of thousands of delegates and observers gather at the UN climate conference — COP30 — in Belém, Brazil.
So while COP negotiates transitioning away from fossil fuels and adopting sustainable sources of energy, The Signal will connect with local voices about climate action and how people are facing the impact from new climate realities.Â
Back in the summer I started bolstering my understanding of what’s happening to our planet when I was fortunate enough to be chosen to join the Oxford Climate Journalism Network, a program of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.
I am part of the eighth cohort of 100 journalists to do this. In my group there are journalists and editors from 59 countries.
The point of the network is to bring together journalists from around the world in order to improve the quality, understanding and impact of climate coverage.
My learning is ongoing and it’s already been incorporated into The Signal and in my reporting. One thing that has really spoken to me in recent months is that everything has a climate change connection and the stories to be told are endless.
For this climate week we are talking with economist Jim Stanford and folks with the Federation of Labour about what a just transition for this province can look like.
We are also speaking with farmers about adaptation and food security, we will hear from activities who are pushing for stronger climate politics and action, and we will have a conversation about climate change and health.Â
On CBCNL’s new local news podcast This is Newfoundland and Labrador, also hosted by me, we will drop a climate themed episode on Wednesday.
