A New York City police officer was killed, and at least two other people were shot Monday evening in a midtown office building that houses the National Football League (NFL) and some of the nation’s top financial firms, according to authorities and local reports.
The response came after a “shots fired call” just before 6:30 p.m. local time, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department’s office for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) told Newsweek by phone. Police confirmed the police activity was near Park Avenue and East 52nd Street in New York City.
The shooter was identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter, The New York Times reported.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed on X that “the scene has been contained, and the lone shooter has been neutralized.” The conditions of the victims remain unknown as the investigation continues.
The Context
The shooting took place in one of Manhattan’s most prominent business districts, affecting a building that houses some of America’s largest financial institutions including Blackstone and JP Morgan, as well as the consulate general of Ireland.
The incident disrupted a critical area of New York’s financial sector and triggered widespread emergency protocols across the city.
What To Know
Emergency crews responded to the Park Avenue office building following reports of gunfire.
Authorities told local station ABC 7 that the shooter reportedly entered the building and, while in the lobby, fired at an officer, who was working private security at the time he was shot, and a civilian. Police sources also told the station that the suspect allegedly killed himself on the 33rd floor of the building.
Local television footage captured dramatic scenes of office workers evacuating with their hands raised above their heads, a standard safety protocol during active shooter situations.
The FBI deployed agents and personnel to support what Deputy Director Dan Bongino described on social media as an “active crime scene.”
New York City’s emergency management system issued alerts warning of traffic delays, road closures, and public transportation disruptions throughout the surrounding area. The building’s location near major transit hubs amplified the impact on evening commuters.
