Ears in Rider Nation perked up last week when rumours swirled that the Toronto Argonauts had contacted Roughriders head coach Corey Mace regarding their vacant head coach position.

Riders Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Jeremy O’Day says the Argos didn’t ask him to talk to Mace. Our SportsCage CFL insider, Farhan Lalji from TSN, broke down the story:

“I don’t think anybody contacted him directly. I don’t think the Argos are that brazen, but I do think some tires were kicked with people who knew Corey to gauge whether he would have any interest, any inclination at all, before they asked for permission. They didn’t want to waste a bunch of people’s time.”

“Now look, there’s one way to do things, and that’s the right way, and the league rules say you can’t even have indirect contact. So, was there any informal, low-level back-channel, indirect contact? Sounds like there was, but I don’t think anybody contacted Corey Mace directly. I don’t think any of these even indirect conversations were extended; I think it was like a quick call—nope, okay, bye, kind of like that.”

Lalji was asked if that might be investigated.

“For sure it will, and it could be fineable, there’s no doubt. At the end of the day, everything in Saskatchewan is magnified, especially after you win a Grey Cup. So, big picture, not a lot to see here.”
