The Game Awards will be taking place in Los Angeles, California, on Dec. 11, and six games are up for the top prize: Game of the Year.
The awards show will be streamed online through various platforms, including YouTube, Twitch, Instagram and TikTok.
The Game Awards, which began in 2014, are not the only awards for video games, but they are considered the most prestigious.
The voting body is made up of people whose job it is to write about and review video games.
Most categories are voted on by media outlets that cover video games in some way, including CBC News.
More specific awards, such as ones for accessibility and esports, are voted on by people who specialize in those topics.
But it’s not only professionals who get to pick the winners — fans can vote, as well.
Most fans can submit a ballot through the Game Awards website. The winners are chosen through a blended vote of the media jury (90 per cent) and fan ballots (10 per cent).
Past Game of the Year winners include Astro Bot (2024), Baldur’s Gate 3 (2023) and Elden Ring (2022).
