‘The production used the icy lake for a dramatic dog-sled chase, capturing the stark beauty and haunting serenity of our winter landscape under crisp northern skies’

The winter landscape, including an ice-covered Lake Nipissing, has been featured in a high-profile horror movie that is currently playing on Netflix.

The online streaming platform featured Lake Nipissing on the #Netflixyourneighbourhood website as a filming location for the feature film.

“These scenes were filmed on Lake Nipissing in North Bay, one of Ontario’s largest lakes, and a hot spot for beaches, marinas, and boating in the summer, while winter transforms the lake into a hub for ice fishing, snowmobiling, and local festivals,” Netflix stated on its site.

Frankenstein, a new adaptation directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, was partially shot on the frozen surface of Lake Nipissing near King’s Landing.

The film is one of the top five projected Oscar nomination leaders that includes “One Battle After Another”; “Sinners”; “Hamnet”; and “Wicked: For Good.”

“The production used the icy lake for a dramatic dog-sled chase, capturing the stark beauty and haunting serenity of our winter landscape under crisp northern skies,” stated Tourism North Bay about the film.

The film is an adaptation of the classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Tourism North Bay was proud to promote the new movie.

“For fans of the movie and travellers alike, this means Lake Nipissing isn’t just our backyard — it’s now part of the cinematic world captured by Netflix. From the rugged ice and sweeping horizon to forest-lined shores and the stillness of winter, our region helped bring the film’s gothic vision to life,” Tourism North Bay continued on social media.

“So whether you’re a local or visiting from afar — imagine standing where the Creature once glided across ice, or gazing out over the frozen water into a beautiful sunset. For a weekend getaway, a winter adventure, or just a filming-location selfie — Lake Nipissing, North Bay offers it all.”
