Layla Young, 17, who studies in sixth form at Prestatyn High School, was crowned champion at the England Boxing Women’s Winter Box Cup in Leigh on Sunday (December 7).
This came only weeks after she secured the England Boxing National Development Championship title in Kettering.
The weekend’s tournament saw Layla represent the Merseyside and Cheshire squad; in Saturday’s (December 6) semi-final, she forced the referee to stop the contest in the second round after her opponent was deemed unable to continue.
Cheered on by her mum, grandad and sister, Layla advanced to Sunday’s final, where she saw off her opponent from Southampton after a fight which went to the judges’ score card.
Layla is a member of West Wirral Club Amateur Boxing Club, and also coaches herself at Denbighshire Taekwondo Academy in Prestatyn.
She is a 2nd Dan Black Belt in taekwondo.
Her father, Paul said: “Layla has been doing sport from a very young age, and has also represented. Her dream is to go to the Olympics.
“I’m just very proud of her. She doesn’t stop training, and is always trying to better herself. She’s been like that since she was about six years old. She’s non-stop.”
