Human remains found in Niagara-on-the-Lake in August belonged to a 24-year-old Black man from Toronto who went missing in May 2022.
Niagara Regional Police said in a news release that the man’s identity is not being released at the request of his family.
Police have deemed the man’s death a homicide and previously said he was killed between late 2021 and spring of 2025.
“This homicide remains an active investigation by detectives with the NRPS Homicide Unit in collaboration with the Toronto Police Service,” Tuesday’s news release read.
Police were called to an area near Read Road and the shore of Lake Ontario on the afternoon of Aug. 31, 2025, for reports of human remains.
Officers arrived and initially found a human skull. Three days later, full skeletal remains were recovered from the same area.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
