Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll returned to the ice before the start of practice on Wednesday, but departed before the session began, TSN’s Mark Masters reports.

It was the first time the 27-year-old netminder had been spotted skating since sustaining a lower-body injury last week.

Woll, 27, was placed on injured reserve over the weekend after leaving Toronto’s 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 4.

Woll appeared to hurt himself while making a save in the second period, and did not return for the start of the final frame.

The game against Carolina was Woll’s eighth start in nine contests with Anthony Stolarz still out with an upper-body injury.

In eight games played since rejoining the team following a personal leave in training camp, the St. Louis native holds a 4-3-1 record with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage.

While Woll’s return to practice comes as a positive to the banged-up Leafs, the team placed defenceman Dakota Mermis on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 8.

Henry Thrun was recalled from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies in a corresponding move.

Mermis was on the receiving end of a knee-on-knee hit from Tampa Bay Lightning forward gage Goncalves in the team’s 2-0 win on Monday. Goncalves was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play.

In 11 games played this season, Mermis has recorded one goal and 11 shots on net across 14:19 of ice time per night.

Thrun has yet to play for the Maple Leafs this season after being acquired from the San Jose Sharks in a trade for Ryan Reaves over the summer.

In 119 games all spent with the Sharks, Thrun has recorded five goals and 20 assists.

Morgan Rielly also missed practice on Wednesday while battling an illness, the team announced.

The West Vancouver, B.C. native has totaled five goals and 17 assists to begin his 13th season in the NHL.

Montreal Canadiens

Forward Jake Evans is absent from practice (personal) but will join the team in New York when they face the Rangers on Saturday.

Per RDS’ Luc Gelinas, Evans is visiting a doctor in Philadelphia for a foot injury.

The 29-year-old has four goals and eight points in 29 games this season.

After last night’s 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Canadiens recalled forward Owen Beck, defenceman Adam Engstrom and goaltender Jacob Fowler.

Per The Athletic’s Arpon Basu, Beck skated between Josh Anderson and Alexandre Texier at practice this morning.

The Canadiens take on the Penguins tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.

Ottawa Senators

Defenceman Thomas Chabot won’t make the team’s upcoming three-game road trip and there’s no update on his status, per Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch.

Chabot has missed 11 of the past 12 games as he is currently dealing with an upper-body injury.

He has two goals and 10 points in 18 games while averaging 21:55 of ice time.

The Senators have loaned forward Olle Lycksell to the AHL’s Belleville Senators, the team announced on Wednesday.

Lycksell, 26, was recalled to Ottawa on Tuesday but did not appear in the Senators’ 4-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

The Swedish winder now heads back down to the American League, where he has five points across his past six games.

Lycksell has made six appearances for Ottawa this season after signing with the team as an unrestricted free agent this past summer, scoring one goal while averaging 10:19 of action per game.

A sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2017, Lycksell has two goals and 10 assists in 51 career games played.
