The New York Historical Society has announced that its new Tang Wing for American Democracy will open in June 2026. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), whose founder Robert A.M. Stern passed away last month, the 71,000-square-foot expansion seeks to broaden both the institution’s footprint and its programming capacity ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The addition enables a tenfold expansion of the Academy for American Democracy, allowing the civics program to serve up to 30,000 sixth-grade students annually in dedicated classrooms. The wing also incorporates the new Klingenstein Family Gallery for rotating exhibitions, the Stuart and Jane Weitzman Shoe Museum, expanded storage for the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library’s archival collections, and a conservation facility for artworks and historical objects. The American LGBTQ+ Museum is scheduled to join the complex in late 2027.

The design of the Tang Wing was centered around a desire to connect contemporary volumes with the institution’s 1908 building through a granite facade sourced from the same Deer Isle quarry used for the original structure. The scheme also features light-filled galleries, a landscaped courtyard, and a rooftop terrace overlooking Central Park.Â
