The aftershocks are continuing in the CFL after last week’s announcement that John Hufnagel was leaving Calgary to join the Toronto Argonauts. Stampeders broadcaster Jock Wilson was on the SportsCage and described the emotions in Calgary.

“I had an inkling that he wasn’t going to be back with Calgary this year because I was told by somebody in the organization that his contract was up. And if you’ve followed what’s happened with John Hufnagel, he’s given up a lot of his responsibility. Huff was hired as the coach and general manager. He transitioned Dave Dickinson into the coaching position. Then he transitioned Dave Dickinson into the general manager’s position. So there are two big titles lost.”

“And then Huf became the president of the organization, and that really wasn’t his forte. He didn’t like the business side of it. He’s a football guy. So they brought in Jay McNeil to become president, and they had to find a way to keep him in the organization. So I’m disappointed that he is not going to retire with the Calgary Stampeders, that he’s going in a similar role to the Toronto Argonauts.”

“I don’t know how long this contract is going to be, but, you know, Pinball Clemens needs some help. John Murphy needs some help. And if you need some football help, John Hufnagel is a pretty good resource to add to your arsenal. I’m not surprised, but I’m disappointed.”
