The Toronto Argonauts are set to hire longtime CFL coach Greg Quick as the team’s defensive coordinator, per sources.

Quick has been with the Montreal Alouettes since 2021, first as a defensive and special teams assistant, then as the defensive line coach, and most recently overseeing linebackers. He has helped the team reach two Grey Cups, winning one in 2023.

Alouettes’ defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe, under whom Quick has worked, is known for his aggressive, attacking style. The Argonauts hope Quick can bring a similar philosophy to Toronto’s defence.

The 69-year-old has one season as a defensive playcaller at the CFL level on his resume, previously handling coordinator duties with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2015. That team finished with a 3-15 record, as head coach Corey Chamblin was fired midseason.

The Baldwin-Wallace University graduate has had two previous stints in Toronto, linebackers coach from 2010 to 2011 and again in 2018. He also spent time as an assistant in Montreal in 2014 and from 2016 through 2017. Also, he was the CFL’s first Global scouting director from November 2019 until his hiring by the Alouettes.

Quick began his coaching career in 1983 at Emporia State University, where he was promoted through the ranks to defensive coordinator. He had stops as an assistant at Heidelberg University, New Mexico State, Pennsylvania Western University-Edinboro, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and the University of San Diego, coaching both sides of the football. He has had three stints as a college head coach, at the University of Chicago from 1989 to 1993, St. Norbert College from 1994 to 1998, and Concord University from 2003 to 2008, posting a 48-112 overall record.

Toronto had co-defensive coordinators last season, with Jason Shivers and Kevin Eiben splitting duties. 3DownNation reported on Friday Shivers was not being brought back by the Argos under new head coach Mike Miller.

The Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final in 2024. Nick Arbuckle threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s Most Outstanding Player.

Toronto ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The team’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, the leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and the leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. The Argos ranked ninth in attendance with 15,109 average fans at BMO Field, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
