The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is investigating after a Surrey Police Service (SPS) officer driving a police vehicle struck and killed a woman Sunday night.
The Surrey Police Service says the collision happened around 7:20 p.m. near the intersection of 152 Street and 64 Avenue in the city’s South Newton area.
“Despite medical attention from SPS officers, Surrey Fire Service firefighters, and BCEHS paramedics, the woman tragically passed away at the scene of the collision,” said a police report.
The intersection was closed for several hours as investigators worked, but has since reopened.
The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
