A fire in a block of vacant businesses has closed part of Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.

Crews were called to the one-storey building at the corner of Portage and Banning Street just before 5:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The structure has four store fronts but all were vacant.

Firefighters could be seen inside and checking the roof for hot spots around 6:45 a.m.

Traffic westbound on Portage is blocked and being detoured through a parking lot at Burnell Street.
