Filming Italy Venice Award Delegation Red Carpet - The 82nd Venice International Film Festival

In August, Cristiano Ronaldo (presumably) got down on one knee and asked his long-term girlfriend and mother of his children, Georgina Rodríguez, to marry him. What made this gesture so surprising wasn’t that it took him ten years to propose but that he popped the question with a ludicrously large diamond ring. Jeweler Maggi Simpkins estimated that the oval diamond is somewhere between 25 and 30 carats and cost $2 million to $4 million. For a mere civilian like myself, that’s a lot to digest. Apparently, it was for Rodríguez, too.

In a new interview with Elle Spain, Rodríguez said that, although they’ve been together for a decade, Ronaldo proposing was “the last thing” on her mind. “It took me a long time to process the enormous stone he gave me,” she said, adding that she was “so shocked” she had to leave the ring in her room for an entire day before opening it again (after she snapped a photo for Instagram, of course). Although the size astounded her, she agreed that the huge rock is “gorgeous” and was “the least he could offer me after ten years of waiting.”

While you might think Rodríguez can’t really wear a rock that size out in public, the couple did lug it to a dinner at the White House last month. Looks like she only wears it for extra-special occasions, huh?
