Tangerine is the latest provider to launch an NBN 500 plan early, ahead of the NBN speed upgrades going live in September

Customers who pick up the NBN plan before September 14 will get NBN 1000 speeds until October 14. After this point, they’ll be dropped down to a max of 500Mbps. There’s also a $20 per month discount currently available on the first six months.

Here’s Tangerine’s NBN 500 plan:

NBN 500 plans are only available to customers with FTTP or HFC connections.

As part of the change, Tangerine has stopped selling NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans. It also no longer sells NBN 100 plans to customers on FTTP and HFC. NBN 100 is only available to customers on other fixed-line connection types. Tangerine’s pricing for its NBN 100 and NBN 500 plans is identical.

Exetel and SpinTel are the other two major providers who have already launched NBN 500 plans. Exetel’s is perhaps the most interesting, as it allows customers to pay $1 per day to boost to 1Gbps speeds, or hibernate their connection to save $1 per day. Hibernated connections are slowed down to 12Mbps, so that smart home devices continue to work.

Conversely, SpinTel’s plan is more of a no-frills affair.

Here’s how pricing for three NBN 500 plans currently in the WhistleOut database compares:

NBN’s September speed upgrades will see NBN 100 speeds bumped to 500Mbps for households on HFC and FTTP connection types. Providers including Telstra, Optus, and Superloop have confirmed customers on their NBN 100 plans (and on an eligible tech type) will be bumped up to NBN 500 for no extra cost when the upgrades go live.

But given the trend of taking NBN 500 live early, we wouldn’t be surprised if some other providers also tried to get in on the action.
