Avid radio-listeners who live in the Appleton and Oshkosh areas are saying goodbye to WNAM 1280 AM as it prepares to sign off following nearly eight decades of broadcasting.
The radio station released an official statement on its website on Dec. 17 breaking the news.
“After careful consideration, we must share that WNAM 1280 AM will cease broadcasting on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at midnight,” the post reads. “This difficult decision comes in response to evolving listener habits and economic realities that have reshaped the media landscape.”
WNAM 1280 AM made its first broadcast over 78 years ago on May 23, 1947. That original broadcast included four breaks for news, a segment called “Voices of the Army,” two hours allotted for a Cincinnati vs. Chicago Cubs game, and an hour of “Dinner Melodies” – “For your dinner hour enjoyment, the world’s finest music.”
“Over the decades, we’ve celebrated milestones, weathered storms, and shared countless moments with you, our loyal listeners,” the post reads. “We’ve helped drive customers to local businesses, delivered breaking news, and hopefully made a small but meaningful difference in your day. It has been our honor to serve as stewards of this legacy.”
The long-time station is known to broadcast play-by-plays of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers baseball games, which its done for the past 16 seasons. In the statement, the radio station announced that coverage of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will continue on its sister station, WOSH 1490 AM.
“Please continue to tune in as we honor our final days on the air,” the post reads. “From all of us at WNAM 1280 AM — thank you for listening.”
