Calgary Flames defenceman Jake Bean will undergo surgery to repair an undisclosed injury and will be out indefinitely, head coach Ryan Huska announced on Thursday.

Bean, 27, was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 11, last appearing for Calgary on Dec. 6.

“Jake is going to have surgery coming up here and he is going to be out indefinitely for us,” said Huska.

“He has been dealing with something for quite a while now, so unfortunately for him, this is the stage that it is at now and he will be out indefinitely.”

The 6-foot-1 blueliner has played in just 16 games for the Flames this season, recording one goal and one assist.

Huska added that Bean had been attempting to play through the injury, but later said that undergoing surgery was “the best path forward for him”.

The third-year head coach could not say whether or not Bean would return this season.

A former first-round pick in 2016, Bean has scored 16 goals and 65 points across 277 career NHL contests in his time with the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Flames.

The Calgary native is set for unrestricted free agency at season’s end after signing a two-year, $3.5 million deal with the Flames back in 2024.
