It is nothing simpler than a yard here or a yard there that can turn around the fortunes of a struggling football team.

“There are lots of mistakes (we are making) on the game film, just watching it, little mistakes that maybe you don’t notice as a viewer, but when we are breaking down the tape there are these little details that need cleaned up,” Bombers running back Brady Oliveira said on Wednesday after practice.

The Bombers, in a three-game losing streak, play host to the Toronto Argonauts at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday night.
Winnipeg is in third place in the West Division heading into Week 9 of the regular season. The Argos beat the Blue Bombers 31-17 last Saturday in Toronto.
“It is still so early in the season that right now is not the time to panic or freak out, worrying about the three consecutive losses,” Oliveira said. “If we focus on (the finer details) I think we will be fine. However, we have to play better football, come Friday.”

Oliveira lumps himself into a group of players who must sharpen up ‘the finer details’ that have occurred in recent times.
In the loss to the Argos last Saturday, Oliveira put the ball on the carpet late in the fourth quarter, which was his first lost fumble of the season. The former CFL MVP is still looking for his first 100-yard rushing game and his first rushing touchdown of 2025.
Beyond a win to snap the slump, Oliveira wants to see a clean game from his cohorts in charge of moving the ball downfield.
“What I would like to see is the details, myself included, everyone, we can always clean up the finely tuned details, and when you do that, you will start to see a really explosive offence,” Oliveira said. “There just have been way too many small mistakes.”

Currently, the Bombers have two rushing touchdowns this season — with rookie Matthew Peterson and Zach Collaros finding the end zone — and a dozen touchdown receptions. Nic Demski leads the way with five. Collaros is eighth in passing yards with 1,031 and Chris Streveler, who will be the Blue Bombers’ starting QB on Friday, is 11th with 558 passing yards.
Oliveira is encouraged because the mistakes are totally with the control of the players on the field. The faux pas are not based on a talent deficit or a shortage of heart and hustle.
“It’s not like there are guys out there who are not giving an effort and not fighting until the last whistle has blown,” Oliveira said. “But it is the small details and if we can correct them, bring the young guys up to speed as well, we will be alright.”
