Kootenay soccer seeks input for multi-sport facility

The Kootenay South Youth Soccer Association is seeking feedback on a year-round, multi-sport facility intended to serve Greater Trail, Castlegar and surrounding area.

Winter access to indoor facilities is in high demand, so KSYSA is sending out a survey to gauge the interest of residents and consideration of numerous options in building a facility that would expand usage and benefit local communities.

The facility would not only be for indoor soccer, but may include multiple sports and activities from basketball to yoga.

“There are many different ways a facility like this could be designed, from a simple outdoor turf field with lights to a fully covered, multi-use space with viewing areas, meeting rooms, and community gathering spaces,” reads the survey introduction.

“Some features could make soccer and other sports more enjoyable and accessible; others could help the facility generate revenue through tournaments, rentals, and community events, strengthening its long-term sustainability.”

Greater Trail has several fields throughout the area, but few indoor facilities that are available and readily accessible to the KSYSA and other sports and recreation activities, especially in winter.

However, there are many questions when it comes to a facility that sounds similar to the Willi Krause Fieldhouse in Trail.

Also, deciding who will pay for it, operate and maintain the facility is still to be determined.

“Because every feature has both benefits and costs — to build, operate, heat, staff, and maintain — we’ll need to make thoughtful choices about what comes first and what can be added over time.”

This survey invites the public to share what matters most to your family, what you’d find most useful, and what you think would make this a strong, sustainable community asset for years to come.
