Battlefield 6 has long been poised as the antidote to Call of Duty burnout, forgoing over-the-top movement and silly skins for a more methodical shooter that takes itself seriously. However, just two months after launch, BF6 already appears to be falling into the same trap as its biggest competitor.
Scan through any of Black Ops 7’s reviews, most of which are negative, and you’ll see the same complaint again and again: “AI slop”. Players were exhausted when it was plastered throughout Black Ops 6, with the notorious six-fingered Santa reaching out to choke the life from the series, but the feeling has only been exacerbated in the sequel, as the satisfaction of earning calling cards has been completely diminished by throwaway rewards churned out from a lifeless machine.
Unfortunately, despite the unending backlash Activision continues to face, it looks like EA is following suit with Battlefield 6, as players note that the new stickers look suspiciously AI-generated, with one featuring an M4A1 that has two barrels. “I would literally prefer to have no sticker than some low quality AI generated garbage,” said u/Willcario, who brought this to the community’s attention. “You can look at BO7 and see how many favours AI generated rewards won with them”.
“We Don’t Need More Garbage In The Game”
One of the big concerns when AI is used in any aspect of game development, however small, is how deep it runs; many players are now concerned that stickers are only the most obvious example, and that everything from flavour text and soldier cosmetics to weapon skins might be using the technology. After taking a look ourselves, we immediately turned up AI art among the community portals, so it’s certainly seeping into areas of the game beyond stickers.
Of course, none of this has been confirmed, and the M4A1 example may even be a human error, but with how deeply AI has crept into game development across the entire industry, the skepticism is more than warranted.
AI is a poison in creativity for artistic values and should be outright banned from all media – u/iFlashings.
“If they’re using AI for useless item shop filler junk, I can only imagine how much it’s being used to develop the rest of the game,” u/smells-like-updog said. “Methinks instances such as the main menu UI getting wrecked in a weekly patch might start to become more and more common as time goes on.”
There are a couple of key reasons why AI is so controversial. Firstly, it scrapes artists’ work without permission or consent, but when it comes to fully-priced $70 games, players find it inexcusably “lazy”, insulted that companies like EA would have the gall to try and sell them artwork riddled with mistakes. “If we are paying beyond full price for these games, I want beyond the fu**ing effort. Instead we get this half a**ed BS,” wrote u/Thwomp69.
“They can’t get literally one guy to spend a couple seconds looking at these to make sure they’re not glaringly awful?” added u/PayWooden2628. “The fact they didn’t catch that before releasing shows how little they are trying,” u/torev said.
As with Call of Duty, what appears to be a blatant use of AI has soured the community on the entire experience, and there are countless posts across the subreddit and social media now calling on EA to remove these elements and replace them with stickers created by actual human artists. Whether Battlefield Studios will take the feedback on board or continue pushing AI unashamedly, as Activision has, remains to be seen.
