Dayne St. Clair is on the verge of a big move, but is that enough for Steven Caldwell to lock him into Canada’s starting XI for the final Race for the Roster of 2025?
According to multiple reports, the 28-year-old St. Clair is set to join MLS Cup champions Inter Miami in free agency. The deal has yet to be completed, but the Pickering, Ont. native appears set to remain in Major League Soccer and not move abroad as had been speculated in some circles.
While the move is undoubtedly a giant one for St. Clair’s career, Caldwell isn’t ready to hand him Canada’s No. 1 shirt just yet ahead of Maxime Crepeau. Still, Caldwell acknowledges that playing in the spotlight alongside Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul with the league’s flagship franchise can only help raise St. Clair’s profile and, perhaps, give him the edge to start for Canada next summer at the World Cup.
With Caldwell reticent to lock St. Clair in just yet, Luke Wileman posed an interesting question for the former Scotland defender this week.
Steven Caldwell, Race for the Roster (TSN)
Is he closer to locking in another player to join Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, Stephen Eustáquio, Tajon Buchanan, Richie Layrea, Moïse Bombito and Alistair Johnston in the starting XI or removing one from it? The question is posed with both Bombito (leg fracture) and Johnston (hamstring) still sidelined with significant injuries. Without naming names as the potential next additions, Caldwell went with the former, noting that healthy versions of Bombito and Johnston are unquestionable locks, but acknowledged that a discussion will be had down the road should their returns to fitness become complicated.
With that, here is your final Race for the Roster of 2025.
