When to go to the doctor for your flu symptoms

  • December 25, 2025

UPPER MICHIGAN (WLUC) – Colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses are common this time of year. You might wonder where to go when your symptoms start.

Family Medicine Physician Dr. Kristi Wegener, with Aspirus Health, advises starting with your primary care provider for non-emergency situations.

If your primary care doctor’s schedule is full, you should go to a walk-in clinic. Clinics are designed for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

Wegener says demand for services increases in the winter, so choosing the right place to get care can help you save time.

“In the emergency department, patients are seen based on their level of acuity, meaning the most serious conditions are treated first,” Wegner said. “For people with non-life-threatening concerns, this can mean a longer wait in the emergency room.”

Wegener says if you’re unsure where to go, start with the Aspirus Nurse Contact Center. A registered nurse can provide guidance based on your needs. To reach the contact center, call 715-843-1236. The line is open 24/7.
