The 2025 MLB trade deadline is just hours away, and plenty of teams are already getting in on the action.

The Arizona Diamondbacks unofficially kicked things off last week by trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, and several other teams got in the mix over the weekend. This week then began with a shocker, as a likely trade target, Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through Aug. 31 in connection with a sports-gambling investigation.

The biggest moves so far arrived Wednesday. The Seattle Mariners added another Diamondbacks infielder, this time reuniting with third baseman Eugenio Suarez to add a major power threat to a lineup in need of it. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds added a Gold Glove third baseman in Ke’Bryan Hayes and a solid starting pitcher in Zack Littell.

Both contenders in the NL East made major bullpen moves. The splashiest trade belonged to the Philadelphia Phillies with their deal for All-Star closer Jhoan Duran, but the New York Mets responded with quantity, landing Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals, Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants and Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles.

With one day left to go, there are still plenty of moves to be made. The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers have all been conspicuously quiet, and there are still some major names on the board in Steven Kwan, Mason Miller. Sandy Alcantara and perhaps even Mackenzie Gore or Joe Ryan.

While none of those teams or players were first to move Thursday, a Cy Young winner is changing teams at the deadline. The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians is the day’s first major move.

Bieber heads to the team after missing the entire 2025 season so far while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He is working his way back and made a heavily-scouted rehab start Tuesday, so he should find his way into the Blue Jays’ rotation before long. Toronto gave up pitcher Khal Stephen in the deal.
