The NASCAR world is mourning after the death of Dennis Hamlin, the father of Denny Hamlin, following a house fire in Gaston County, North Carolina. Dennis Hamlin was 75. His wife, Mary Lou Hamlin, remains hospitalized with severe burn injuries.

The fire happened Sunday evening and caused heavy damage to the family home. Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic reported that emergency crews found both parents outside the house with serious injuries.

The loss has shaken the NASCAR community as teams and drivers prepare for the 2026 season. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire while the focus remains on supporting the Hamlin family during this difficult time.

Fire details and official response

The fire was reported at 6:19 p.m. Sunday at a home on Blacksnake Road in Gaston County. According to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, several fire departments responded because the area lacked nearby fire hydrants, which made the response more difficult.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home largely engulfed in flames, with fire spreading through the attic. The home later suffered a structural collapse, which slowed emergency efforts and the early stages of the investigation.

Emergency officials said Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin were outside the home when crews arrived.

Medical teams transported them to a nearby hospital. Dennis later died from his injuries. Mary Lou was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where doctors continue to treat her in critical condition.

According to FOX Sports, the extent of the damage and the collapse of the structure have made it difficult for investigators to determine how the fire started. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.

The Role Denny Hamlin’s Father Played in His NASCAR Journey

Dennis Hamlin played a key role in building his son’s racing career from an early age. Dennis introduced Denny Hamlin to racing as a child and invested heavily in his development while the family lived in Virginia. He owned and operated a trailer and hitch business and used much of that income to support his son’s early racing efforts at the grassroots level.

After Denny Hamlin earned his 60th career Cup Series win in October, he reflected on those sacrifices. “He’s the one that got me into racing. He just took me to a racetrack when I was 5 Denny said.” Hamlin also explained how his parents pushed through financial stress to keep his career alive.

“That way is a path I would never recommend anybody taking. Every credit card that comes to the mail, it’s ‘OK, we’ll use it, Hamlin added.” The comments showed how deeply Dennis Hamlin committed himself to his son’s path to the NASCAR Cup Series.

NASCAR community reaction and ongoing support

The news prompted an immediate response across NASCAR. Drivers, team owners, and officials reached out to Hamlin and his family after the report became public. Several competitors shared messages of support, showing the close bonds within the sport.

Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic noted that Dennis Hamlin’s declining health had already shaped much of his 2025 season. Hamlin previously said his father could not travel to Phoenix for the championship race because of illness. Denny Hamlin finished second in that race, aware it could be the last time his father followed a title run so closely.
