The battle to decide the winner of Group B at the World Juniors in Minnesota is set as Canada takes on Finland on Wednesday night.
Canada has a slight edge in points over Finland thanks to two wins in regulation and a win in overtime in their first three round-robin games. Finland has two regulation wins and an overtime loss.
The winner of the New Year’s Eve game between the two clubs will take the first seed in the group, regardless of it’s done in regulation, overtime, or a shootout.
Canada is coming off a convincing 9-1 victory over Denmark on Monday that saw projected 2026 No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft Gavin McKenna record a hat trick. The 18-year-old winger now leads the tournament with three goals and seven points heading into Tuesday’s action.
Team Canada also picked up a regulation win over Czechia to open the tournament on Dec. 26 and squeaked past Latvia on Saturday for a narrow 2-1 victory in overtime.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hage is right behind McKenna with two goals and six points while Calgary Flames draft pick Zayne Parekh and Nashville Predators first rounder Brady Martin have five points each.
Los Angeles Kings draft pick Carter George started two games for Canada and has a 2-0-0 record with a 3.00 goals-against average and .870 save percentage. Nashville Predators prospect Jack Ivankovic picked up the overtime win against Latvia, allowing a goal on 27 shots.
Finland is coming off a dramatic 2-1 overtime loss to Czechia on Monday. The Czechs led 1-0 for the majority of the game, before Dallas Stars prospect Emil Hemming scored with 20 seconds remaining in the third period to give Finland life.
The Finns’ hopes were dashed shortly into overtime when St. Louis Blues first-round pick Adam Jiricek scored a highlight reel goal to claim the victory for Czechia.
Finland has been led offensively by forwards Jasper Kuhta and Heikki Ruohonen who both have five points in three games. They have wins over Denmark and Latvia in their first two games of the round robin.
Goaltender Petteri Rimpinen started all three games for Finland and has a 1.32 GAA with a .907 save percentage.
If Finland fails to defeat Canada on Wednesday, they will finish as the third seed in Group B and play the second seed in Group A in the quarter-finals.
