“I think we have done enough this week to feel good about our game plan,” he said on Thursday. “We are ready to play.”

The Bombers play host to the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night at Princess Auto Stadium.

Quarterback Zach Collaros did not practice this week due to a neck injury. He was ruled out of the rematch against the Argonauts with the release of Wednesday’s injury report. Collaros did not return for the third quarter in the Blue Bombers’ 31-17 loss at BMO Field last Saturday.

Streveler says executing the staples of offensive football should put the club in a position to lighten the post-game mood. The list of correctable faux pas is lengthy.

“We have to get production on first down,” Streveler said, ‘It is hard (to convert) when you are second and long in this league. We have to get first downs and stay on the field, and we have to finish in the red zone and take care of the football, too. We had too many turnovers last week. Recently, we have been turning the ball over way too much.”

Yep. Three turnovers last week — not including turnovers on downs — and seven in the last three games is the epitome of ‘way too much.’

Streveler also got the nod in the season opener against the B.C. Lions. At the time, Collaros was on the one-game suspension list for missing an out-of-season drug test. Streveler tossed for 246 yards and three touchdowns, as the Bombers opened the year with a 34-20 victory.

“I appreciate these opportunities, and it is no different this week,” he said. “Any time I get a chance to step on the field with the guys, I am excited.”

But his excitement this week is tempered with the human side of a game that is violent in nature.

“It is hard seeing a guy you love and care about, share the same room with, go down (with an injury), but the job is to be ready in those situations and to support him when he is out there and be ready for your opportunity when you are out there,” Streveler said.

Last Saturday, Streveler entered the game against Toronto at the start of the third quarter. Collaros also left the Blue Bombers’ game against the Calgary Stampeders two weeks ago after a hit to the chest late in the second quarter.

Changes will greet Streveler on the offensive end, as rookie Joey Corcoran gets his first career start in the slot position to the left of Streveler.
The Montreal native takes over for Kody Case. Case left the game against Toronto because of an ankle injury. The extent of the injury is unknown. Case replaced Dalton Schoen, who is on the six-game injured list.

“Corcoran is a guy willing to do whatever, when his name is called,” Streveler said. “I am excited he is getting his opportunity. He is a young guy who made some plays in the pre-season and had a couple of catches last week. I remember being a young guy in a position like that. As a veteran now, just being a resource for guys like that is something I try to do.”
Corcoran caught four balls for 25 yards last Saturday.

Gavin Cobb will also make his season debut, behind Corcoran on the depth chart.

The local signed Cobb on Feb. 11. He played his college football with the Manitoba Bisons. He appeared in 11 games with the Edmonton Elks last season. He caught seven passes for 94 yards and one touchdown.

“Cobb has been around this league for a little while,” Streveler said. “He is a guy who is willing to do whatever is asked of him. We have a lot of depth at receiver, we feel good about the guys we have rolling this week, and we are excited about it.”

Finally, Streveler doesn’t care about personal stats or accolades. He cares about one thing: Winning.

“Whatever it takes to get it done,” Streveler said. “That is the mindset going into this game. We have to stay on the field, get yards on first down, and we need some energy. I am going to do whatever it takes to get the win.”
