STANLEY, N.C. — Two people were hospitalized Sunday night for possible smoke inhalation after a large fire sparked at a Stanley, N.C., home owned by NASCAR driver and team owner Denny Hamlin.

Chief David Toomey of the Lucia Riverbend Fire Department said the fire was reported at 6:19 p.m. ET, and both people who went to the hospital were outside the home when emergency services arrived. He did not identify the individuals.

Flames were still bursting from the roof and side of the building as of 9:30 p.m. ET. Emergency personnel began wrapping up the scene around 11:20 p.m. ET, and no fire was visible from the street nearby.

Toomey said 40 to 45 percent of the structure was already burning by the time fire crews arrived, and he described the damage to the house as a total loss. He said that 10 to 15 fire departments responded to the scene due to a lack of fire hydrants in the wooded area.

“They had some really expensive cars in the garage and some racing memorabilia and stuff, so all that was saved,” Toomey told The Athletic at the scene. “We were able to save all that and get it out so it wasn’t damaged.”

Property records show the 3,724-square-foot house was built in 2015 and list the owner as Hamlin’s real estate company, Won One Real Estate. The four-bedroom, three-bath home sits on 1.76 acres and is surrounded by trees. Won One Real Estate built the house after purchasing the land in 2014.

Hamlin won six races and had 14 top-5 finishes this past season. He finished second in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series standings, losing to champion Kyle Larson by four points.

In addition to competing in NASCAR himself, Hamlin co-owns the 23XI Racing NASCAR team with NBA legend Michael Jordan. Earlier this month, the team settled a multimillion-dollar antitrust lawsuit with the league, which it sued alongside Front Row Motorsports.
