Eating Well Doesn't Mean Deprivation says Local Health Coach

As we settle into 2026, many are thinking about self-improvement. It’s a time for setting goals, especially around health and well-being.

But that doesn’t mean food deprivation or cutting out everything you love all at once in order to lose weight.

Kathy Roe, a health coach with Eat Real Therapy, in St. John’s, specializes in helping people build sustainable habits for eating well.

She says think protein, fibre and water.

She uses a 1-2-3 system in putting together her plate.

Roe says start with breakfast by adding one fruit and one vegetable; at lunchtime two fruits and two vegetables, and for supper three fruits and three vegetables. The size of a serving should be the size of your fist.

As for fibre, Roe says most people have a bagel or slice of toast but instead of thinking about cutting that out, she suggests adding a fruit or vegetable, and an egg for protein.
