The King’s Academy’s girls varsity soccer team is focused on achieving perfection, and along the way, the squad has simply been excellent. After the first 13 games of the regular season, the team has proven its ability to score goals in bunches and to nearly stop the opposition from scoring at all.
Throughout the current season, TKA has been the most dominant girls high school soccer team in Palm Beach County and one of the most dominant teams across Florida.
After 13 games, TKA is 13-0. Of those 13 victories, 10 have been shutouts. In the other three games, TKA allowed just one goal in two of the matches. Their biggest hurdle was early in the season. Back on Nov. 7, the Lions traveled to Port St. Lucie to play Treasure Coast High School, coming away with a 4-3 victory.
In total, TKA has scored 70 goals and allowed just five. Since that narrow one-goal margin of victory over Treasure Coast, the Lions have only allowed two goals while scoring 62.
“Our defense is led by our goalkeeper Sabrina Callejas, who has a very organized back four that consists of Addie Roach, Deionce Storey, Ava Chapman and Sophia Cueto,” head coach Bridget Mackrey said.
This season-long success has been the case due to a talented and deep roster of 20 players, which allows Mackrey to have competitive practices where players earn their starting roles and significant playing time.
“Practices are always competitive, but the numbers do help make it so that all players are working to earn time consistently,” she said. “There is a friendly internal battle to win on the player depth chart.”
TKA has been so strong this season that its girls soccer squad is ranked as the top team in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s (FHSAA) Class 2A rankings, 13th in Florida when compared to teams in all classifications, and ranked as the 26th best girls high school soccer team in the United States.
The top goal scorers for TKA have been junior striker Mia Mackrey and senior midfielder Lola Hathorne. Through 13 games, Mackrey has scored 27 goals, while Hathorne has found the back of the net on 11 occasions. Senior midfielder Cueto has also contributed to the goal totals by having 1.3 assists per game. Sophomore Callejas has done an outstanding job at the net. Through the first 13 games, she has had 34 saves.
TKA’s regular season ends on Jan. 14, when the Lions host the Pine School from Hobe Sound. After that, the FHSAA postseason will get underway, which will involve matches to decide the winners of the district, region and, eventually, the Class 2A state championship, which will be played in mid-February at Stadium Field at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
“The girls know our ultimate goal this year is to win everything,” Mackrey said. “We use past let-downs as motivation to get to that win at the end. This team is so positive and supportive of each other. It’s a big family unit.”
Based on TKA’s current level of play, it will be a surprise if the TKA Lions are not playing for the Class 2A state title in Auburndale.
