Kayla Harrison and Amanda Nunes are preparing for what many are calling the biggest women’s MMA fight ever, and a pair of standout mixed martial artists have offered up their thoughts on the bout. Harrison aims to defend her bantamweight crown against a returning former multiple-time holder of the UFC’s 135-pound strap in Nunes at UFC 324 on January 24th.
Surging UFC bantamweight contender Melissa Croden recently offered up her assessments of the looming super fight, with a specific guided focus on the fight not being a headlining attraction. When asked if she had any thoughts on the card placement hierarchy consideration of Harrison vs. Nunes being a co-main event under the interim lightweight title clash between Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje, Croden said [via MMA Canada],
“I feel like it’s deserving of a main event. I mean they’re both Kayla Harrison and Amanda Nunes like they’re both top of their game. So, I think it’s deserving of a main event, but you know, who knows who makes these decisions, you know? I just feel like they do it based off of how they’re feeling that day. I don’t know. Who knows?”
“But regardless, I think it’s going to be a sick fight to watch. Like, they’re both so talented and they’re both like monsters in the game. They’re both big. They’re both strong. And they’ve been doing it for so long. They’re both used to winning, so it’s one of those fights that will be really fun to watch.”
Kayla Harrison vs. Amanda Nunes “brings light to the division”
This long-awaited Harrison-Nunes clash has injected a certain level of enthusiasm into the 135-pound class, and when discussing the surrounding benefits of what this fight is doing to the weight class that she fights within, Melissa Croden stated [via MMA Canada],
“Yeah, it definitely brings light to the division itself as a whole. Like there’s a lot of talented girls in the bantamweight division in the UFC. Yeah, like I think there’s definitely more movement more recently than there has been before, but I think that’s like that with every division.”
“They all kind of like have their moments and they peter off and come back. It just depends on who’s in the limelight at the time and bringing attention to it.”
Also, Sara Collins weighed in on the massive UFC title fight with the former PFL title challenger, recognizing the magnitude of the matchup. Collins recently battled Cris Cyborg for her PFL featherweight strap, with one of Cyborg’s only two losses being to Amanda Nunes. Collins also comes from a judo base with the prolific Judoka Kayla Harrison, preparing to take on the women’s MMA GOAT in the coming weeks.
With the standout 145-pounder taking her focus from the Smart Cage to what’s going down in the octagon at UFC 324 with Harrison versus Nunes, Collins said [via Bowks Talking Bouts],
“I think it’s going to be an interesting fight. I definitely think Kayla can win. Especially Nunes coming off quite a long break. Kayla is just like hitting her peak at the moment. I think it’s a great opportunity and timing for Kayla to really show that she’s the best and that judo is the best.”
