Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Micah Johnson announced his retirement on Monday at Mosaic Stadium. Johnson’s 13-year career saw him earn three Grey Cup rings, five All-CFL selections, and seven divisional All-CFL nods. Riders’ legendary quarterback Darian Durant never played with Johnson, but he did line up against him several times and has a great deal of respect for the Georgia native.
“Thirteen years at any position in professional football is just outstanding. We all know the time frame that you have as a player, but for a defensive lineman, especially, inside the trenches, an interior defensive lineman at that, to last 13 years, to still be playing at a high level is just tremendous.”
“It’s a tremendous feat for him to keep his body in shape, to stay healthy, all of those good things. But we all know at some point you must hang up the cleats, and I think that for him, there’s no better way to go out than on top. There’s nothing he hasn’t accomplished, and with him being such good friends with Coach Mace, for him to transition into a coaching role with the team and to be able to continue to bring his football expertise to those guys, the D-line respects him, the organization respects him, and most importantly, Coach Mace respects him enough to give him a coaching job directly after playing. So that says a lot about his character, the type of guy he is, and his knowledge of the game.”
