For a moment, it looked like the Edmonton Oilers finally found a way to string together three straight victories on Saturday night.

Connor McDavid crashed the net in OT against LA Kings goaltender Anton Forsberg and nudged the puck over the goal line. The Rogers Place faithful went wild, celebrating the apparent win, but the refs gave an emphatic “no goal” call before reviewing the play.

After conferring with the NHL’s situation room for a few minutes, the call was upheld as it was deemed that McDavid was guilty of goalie interference. The Oilers couldn’t find a way to end the game after that and eventually fell in the shootout.

It was a damper on what should have been a celebratory night for the team, with a special pre-game ceremony for Leon Draisaitl’s 1,000th NHL point.

McDavid told reporters his perspective on the disallowed goal after the loss.

“I feel like I have the puck and I’m taking it to the net,” McDavid explained. “I’m getting pushed in. I feel like I also kinda maybe tapped it in on the other side.

“The refs and situation room have to make a call, and they felt differently. That’s the way it goes.”

“I just want to play good hockey, that’s all really.”

It was still a good night for the Oilers captain despite the loss and disallowed goal. He scored a timely equalizing goal on a third-period five-on-three power play, extending his point streak to a career-high 18 games.

He also got some support from head coach Kris Knoblauch, who gave his honest thoughts on the overturned goal.

“I thought it should have counted,” Knoblauch said. “I thought he was driving the net, and you don’t usually see that turned over.

“I thought he just drove the puck around the pad and beat him. I don’t think there was any interference that caused that… The puck was already by [the goalie], hit the post and then went in.”

“I thought there were some missed opportunities.”

Alas, the goal wound up coming off the board, and a third-straight win remains elusive for this Oilers club. They will now embark on a quick two-game road trip next week, where they will don their new alternate jerseys, which have a great track record so far.

Perhaps they can find a way to take another run at that winning streak.
