The Montreal Alouettes have added American quarterback Luis Perez to the team’s negotiation list.

The 31-year-old Perez re-signed with the Dallas Renegades in October. He’s started 42 regular season games in the Alliance of American Football, Xtreme Football League, United States Football League and United Football League to earn his ‘The Spring King’ moniker.

Perez led the Arlington Renegades to a 2023 XFL championship. He completed 26-of-36 passes for 288 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions to upset the previously undefeated D.C. Defenders 35-26. For his efforts, the six-foot-three, 222-pound QB was named title game MVP.

In 2024, Perez led the UFL with 2,310 passing yards, 18 touchdown passes and 99.4 QB rating in 10 starts. Last year, he topped the UFL with 2,294 passing yards and completion percentage at 71.6 in 10 starts. Through 20 starts over the last two UFL seasons, the San Diego, California native has posted an 8-12 record.

During 51 spring league games, Perez has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 53 touchdowns against 24 interceptions while adding 75 carries for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

At the collegiate level, Perez starred at East Texas A&M University. In 2017 with the Lions, he completed 70.6 percent of his passes for 4,999 yards with 46 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions in 15 starts. He produced a 10-1 regular season record and lead East Texas on a 4-0 playoff run to win the NCAA Division II national championship that tear. The senior standout earned the Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player in NCAA Division II.

Perez went unselected in the 2018 NFL Draft, but signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent some time on the practice squad with the Rams and also had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, and Los Angeles Chargers.

CFL teams can claim the rights to up to 45 players via the negotiation list on a first-come, first-served basis, provided that they are not eligible for the Canadian or Global Drafts, and have never played in the league before. These players can be added, traded, or removed from the list at any time.

Being added to a negotiation list does not mean that the player has expressed interest in the CFL, and some are unaware that their rights have even been claimed. Players can only force their removal from the list if the team does not provide them with a minimum contract offer at their request.
