How Tip Prompts are Changing Consumer Habits

Canadians are increasingly being prompted to provide a tip, oftentimes at businesses where tips were never required – or expected – before.

Restaurant servers and those in food delivery have traditionally relied on tips to augment their earnings, but now tips are being prompted in a wide variety of businesses and sectors.

Vice President Atlantic with Restaurants Canada, Janick Cormier, says that’s leading to tipping fatigue.

“Tipping at a restaurant has always been part of our culture, but tipping a mechanic has not.” She says “Canadians are getting a bit tired of being asked to pay more than what they’re used to paying and being prompted for a tip; they feel bad if they don’t have to give a tip in certain situations.”
