We’re just four days away from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s premiere on Thursday, 15th January, on Paramount+. Excitement has been building as more images and sneak peeks hit the internet. We’ve seen clips featuring new and Star Trek legacy characters, along with insights from the actors about the upcoming series. Here is Trek Central’s Starfleet Academy Preview to get you in the know before the show airs this coming week!
We have a good look at the show through newly released images. So let’s take a look at these shots and discuss some of the highlights!
EP 1 – “Kids These Days”

There’s a lot to digest and speculate over with this release of images from episode 1, ‘Kids These Days’. See below for the full library of images. One that sticks out is an apparent confrontation between Darem (George Hawkins) and Caleb (Sandro Rosta). There’s definitely an invasion of personal space as the pair square off. It appears Caleb’s start in the academy isn’t going to be smooth sailing.

We haven’t just been treated to images of the students getting up to [no] good. There are also several interesting photos of Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter). One has her looking very serious, in a dark room. What’s interesting here is her uniform, which appears to be a variation on the uniforms worn in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3 and 4. Could this be part of a flashback, perhaps to a point around the Burn?

However, we do get to see a lighter side to the Academy Chancellor. This includes a relaxed one-to-one moment between Ake and her First Officer, Lura Thok (Gina Yashere). Ake is clearly comfortable with her XO, sitting with her legs crossed and smiling. In contrast, the Cadet Master’s posture is strong and formal, almost at attention, despite sitting on a chair. This demonstration of Thok’s mixed Klingon/Jem’Hadar culture is a nice touch.

EP 2 – “Beta Test”

Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but for me, episode 2’s title, ‘Beta Test’, is clearly a nod to the Betazoid in the room – Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner). As well as sporting some interesting powers seen in a previous trailer, many have noted the character is missing the trademark Betazoid black eyes. Of course, we are in the 32nd Century, and there is such a thing as evolution. There are also examples in past Trek series of Betazoids with different coloured eyes (see The Next Generation‘s Devinoni Ral).

However, unlike most of the main characters in this show, Tarima is not a part of Starfleet. She’s a civilian, daughter of the Betazed President. Although this doesn’t stop Tarima from fixing her eyes on Caleb. There have been several shots across trailers and sneak peeks of the pair getting close. This is a very different kind of close to how we see Caleb and Darem in the earlier photo from episode 1!

But will ‘Beta Test’ focus solely on this budding relationship? Or is there something larger at work between the Federation and Betazed? This photo appears to be a delegation meeting with Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr). However, if the other party is Betazed, the question arises: why are they meeting at Starfleet Academy? We don’t have long to wait to find out! See the full library of episode 2 images below.
