The New York Yankees continue to look for offensive upgrades, and the latest report suggests that they’re keeping multiple avenues open, including in free agency and the trade market.

According to MLB.com, the Yankees are discussing potential trades for several star players, including Nico Hoerner of the Chicago Cubs and Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox. That comes on top of ongoing consideration of the top remaining free-agent bats.

“Heyman reported Monday that the Yankees are considering the other two top free-agent hitters, Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette, and discussing trades for several other stars, including Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner and White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.

“After the Cubs reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with third baseman Alex Bregman on Saturday, Hoerner could be the odd man out in the infield. Robert will play in 2026 on a $20 million club option and has another club option for 2027,” he wrote.

The Hoerner angle is particularly interesting. Chicago’s signing of Bregman reshaped its infield, and when teams invest that heavily, it’s very possible that they’ll make a move elsewhere.

Some believe that Matt Shaw could be the one who gets traded, but Heorner would make more sense. Hoerner is a valuable player and someone who would make sense for the Yankees, depending on what they’d have to give up.

For the Yankees, Hoerner represents a different kind of upgrade. He’s not the middle-of-the-order slugger like Tucker or Bichette would be, but he brings contact ability, speed, elite defense, and an answer in the infield.

There’s also a smart thought at play. Pursuing Hoerner doesn’t mean a bigger swing elsewhere can’t happen.

It’d give the Yankees the option to go out and make a big free agent signing.

Whether this interest turns into anything remains to be seen, but the Yankees have continued to prove that they’re willing to make a move if they believe they need to make one. I’d argue that until the Yankees decide to bring back Cody Bellinger or not, we likely won’t see anything, but there are still some questions about what will happen.
