It’s been a staple of awards shows for years, a corny bit designed mostly to bolster confidence in the voting results. At some point during the doldrums of the ceremony, a pair of stereotypically unglamorous accountants walks onstage to deliver highly secret, sealed envelopes to the podium. The boringness is the point: Nobody this uncharismatic could possibly be an actor posing as an accountant. Well at this year’s Golden Globes, it seems that KPMG, the accounting firm hired to certify the results, decided to tweak the script by sending out an employee too debonair to be ignored. If you’re going to be walking among the stars, the thinking appears to have been, look like one.
Enter the implausibly dashing 56-year-old number cruncher Filippo Puglisi-Alibrandi, who caused quite a stir at the Globes this year when he strutted in wearing a black tux, custom-made in Italy. Immaculately groomed, with a thick mane of silver hair, the Italian-born forensic accountant looked less like a behind-the-scenes bean counter and more like someone who belonged onstage, or sitting at the front-row tables with the likes of Leo and Julia.
From the moment he arrived, people couldn’t help but take notice of the silver fox carrying the KPMG silver briefcase with the secret envelopes carefully tucked safely inside, says a THR spy in the audience. Puglisi-Alibrandi definitely got people talking. Attendees were whispering, inquiring about his name, googling, asking about his marital status. One woman at the show quipped to a friend: “I never knew accountants could be so hot. It’s like a younger Richard Gere and he can do your taxes.”
This year, Puglisi-Alibrand, who has not responded to a request for comment, managed to do his job and show people that scrutinizing spreadsheets doesn’t mean sacrificing style. If accounting ever proves to be too taxing, he’s definitely dressed for a second act.
