Mayor Brenda Locke offered “a huge shout out” and her “congratulations” to Cloverdale’s Jenn Gardiner Jan. 12.

The mayor recognized Gardiner on her selection to the Team Canada women’s hockey team for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

“Jenn grew up in Cloverdale,” Mayor Locke said during a Surrey City Council regular meeting. “She started playing hockey at the age of 4 years old.”

The mayor added Gardiner has dreamed of playing for Team Canada ever since the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

“That’s just an inspiring story.”

The mayor also noted Gardiner’s early success playing for the PWHL Vancouver Goldeneyes expansion team.

“She’s going to continue to make all of us in Surrey very, very proud.”

The mayor noted that she had a personal connection to the professional women’s hockey player and newfound Olympian, as her own daughter coached Gardiner when Gardiner played minor hockey.

“She’s just really excited to see how successful Jenn has become.”

The 25th Winter Olympiad is coming up in February in Italy. The puck drops for Team Canada Feb. 5 when they play the Finns, with games following against Switzerland (Feb. 7), Czechia (Feb 9), and the U.S. (Feb 10).

The Team Canada women’s hockey team is the defending gold medalists.
