Vitalité said the clinic, which is scheduled to open Jan. 19, will serve children ages 0-5 who do not have a primary care provider. Roughly 2,000 children in the Beauséjour region will be helped at the clinic, located on Champlain Street in Dieppe.

“The service, previously provided by NB Health Link, is now under the responsibility of the Network. Affected families have been informed of this change,” said Vitalité in a news release on Thursday.

Stéphanie Roy, Vitalité’s assistant vice-president of health and community services, said in the release the clinic is a collaboration between NB Health Link, Vitalité and Public Health.

“Our goal is to attach these children to local family health teams as soon as possible, or at the latest by the end of their follow-up at the clinic,” she said.

The clinic team is made up of physicians and nurses will provide regular medical follow-up for toddlers while they wait to be matched with a primary care provider.

When asked where the clinic’s employees are coming from, Roy said in a statement to Brunswick News the staff is comprised of Vitalité employees, including people who have previously worked with NB Health Link to ensure a “smooth transition and continuity of care.”

At each visit, the team will assess the child’s growth, motor, cognitive and social development, as well as eating habits, sleep and hygiene. Immunization records will be updated, and guidance on safety, prevention and parenting will be provided to parents.

The clinic can treat patients with common ailments like fever, cough, ear infections, respiratory infections, skin rashes, digestive disorders and conjunctivitis. Children may also be followed for chronic conditions such as asthma, eczema or allergies, as well as for behavioural or developmental assessments.

Vitalité said access to the clinic is by referral only and that eligible families will be directed to the service by the health authority’s care teams, as well as those of Horizon Health Network, NB Health Link, and Public Health.

Additionally, all newborns without a primary care provider who are born in Moncton hospitals will also be referred to the clinic.

Asked why the Beauséjour area was chosen for the clinic, Roy said the initiative was created to address a significant access to primary care need for children in that zone. He noted a similar service also currently exists in Edmundston.

“There are no plans to deploy it in other regions at this time. However, the Network remains attentive to evolving needs and future opportunities,” she said in a statement.

Brunswick News has asked Horizon and the Department of Health for comment.
