A Welsh children’s golf tournament has recorded a 28 per cent rise in participation.

The Wales Mini Masters, now heading into its 17th year, recorded 334 entries in 2025, up by 28 per cent from 2024.

The tournament is open to players under 18 who are new to the sport or have recently joined a club with a handicap of 28 or above.

Andrew Jones, event organiser, said: “We had a record number of 334 entries, up 28 per cent on 2024, which is the standout statistic for the year.

“A big jump in those entering the 18-hole event was a significant contributor towards this increase.”

A quarter of participants were girls, and the scheme includes a range of categories from age seven and under through to 12-18, with both nine and 18-hole events.

The 2025 finals took place at Southerndown Golf Club.

Mr Jones said the tournament wouldn’t be possible without the “generosity” of clubs across Wales.

Theo Baker, head of participation and club governance at Wales Golf, said the Mini Masters figures were “very encouraging”.

Mr Baker said: “The proportion of girls entering is strong and they may well have been inspired by Wales hosting the AIG Women’s Open in Royal Porthcawl last year, and the chance to see the world’s best female golfers up close.”

He said the Mini Masters is a “vital stepping stone” in the Wales Golf programme, allowing many players to improve and progress on to the PING Welsh Junior Tour.
