Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has joined forces with a couple of former F1 aces, Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen, to invest in the French soccer club Le Mans, as speculation continues over his retirement plans.

The sports legends are among the latest investors in the second-tier team, connected through the OutField investment group, which boasts experience from their involvement with Brazilian club Coritiba.

Alongside Djokovic, Massa, and Magnussen is Georgios Frangulis, the partner of tennis player Aryna Sabalenka and a Brazilian business tycoon who founded the nutrition brand Oakberry. The quartet is set on aiding Le Mans in achieving success both on the field and in their business endeavors.

Le Mans FC announced: “This partnership marks a new milestone in the history of the Sarthe club, in line with the ambitious vision led by [club president] Thierry Gomez.

“[The aim is] to continue to grow Le Mans FC sustainably in French football and make it the pride of the people of Le Mans, building on the city’s unique sporting heritage.”

Frangulis expressed his enthusiasm about the venture, stating: “We want to help grow the city’s brand and sporting heritage. Le Mans has a unique name in world sport and the sense of belonging the club can offer makes this project exceptional.”

Massa chimed in with his thoughts, saying: “I think everyone knows my passion for football, which is leading me to take this step today. Le Mans FC [also] has a strong connection with motorsport.

“When my good friend and partner at Oakberry, Georgios Frangulis, presented the project to me, I wanted to be a part of it especially alongside people I deeply respect, like Djokovic, who needs no introduction, and Magnussen, with whom I shared many years in Formula One.

The latest move by Le Mans signifies an ambitious push through the ranks, aiming for the pinnacle of French football. They’ve clinched an impressive four promotions in the past decade and are set to compete in Ligue 2 the following season.

Le Mans had their stint in Ligue 1 from 2004 to 2011 but faced liquidation in 2013 due to financial woes. Starting anew from the bottom, they’re now on the cusp of returning to the elite echelons of French football.

The city of Le Mans is synonymous with motorsport, home to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This prestigious event, dating back to 1923, continues to draw the crème de la crème of drivers and manufacturers annually.
