President Jason Roy said with the Credit Union Spark Centre opening up, they can have soccer year-round.Â
“We did futsal before, and we called it indoor soccer to get people to still realize it was soccer, because futsal was kind of a new word in people’s vocabulary, and we went from maybe 50 to 60 kids throughout all the age groups for a Sunday morning program, and we’d have a handful of competitions throughout the winter, but it was a small program, and now it’s grown into well over 300 kids playing in leagues, in competitive streams, trying out for a Division One or even Premier League teams, and we even have some kids going on above that yet, so the development of our kids with Spark Centre has been huge.”
While the league play does take a break for summer, he said in late summer they host the Celtic training camp.
“That’s in partnership with Glasgow, Scotland. It’s really exciting. When we get those coaches into Weyburn and they see the hospitality that Weyburn has to offer, they actually say that Weyburn is one of their best stops. They’re glad it’s the last one because the rest would be not up to par compared to how Weyburn treats them.”
In addition to recruiting volunteers for the Frostival event coming up in March, Roy said the WSA is always welcoming of new people to come on as coaches.
“Sports are taken quite seriously. It can lead to scholarships, and some further things down the road. So, I know some coaches are a little bit scared of that, but, with Weyburn Soccer, education for coaches is a priority, and that’s something that we always offer. Whatever education you need, or even almost what you want, we’ll look at getting you the education that it takes to make you feel comfortable out on that pitch.”
