During the 2025 CFL season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had one of the most explosive offensive units in the league. The explosive nature of the Tiger-Cats’ offensive attack stems from the chemistry between quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and wide receivers Tim White, Kenny Lawler, and Kiondre Smith. However, during a long CFL season, the Tiger-Cats not only compete against the rest of the CFL but also face a battle of attrition. With attrition in mind, the Tiger-Cats can never have enough wide receivers, and if those receivers have the ability to play different positions and special teams, their value goes through the roof.
The most recent addition to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ wide receiver arsenal, American wide receiver Jerjuan Newton, brings versatility to the Tiger-Cats roster.
As a first-year player in the CFL, Jerjuan Newton needs to demonstrate that he has the ability to make plays from several different positions. While the Tiger-Cats’ starting lineup of receivers is loaded, there are times throughout a CFL season when one or more receivers will deal with injuries. When that happens, a player like Newton can become priceless if he has the ability to step in and effectively replace that missing receiver.
The 5’11”, 192-pound Newton is a native of Saint Petersburg, Florida, who has shown that he has the ability to make an impact as either a slot receiver or a wideout. During the 2025 NFL season, the Denver Broncos signed Newton as an undrafted free agent to see if they could find a way to utilize his versatility. Ultimately, Newton was released by the Broncos, but joining the CFL gives him another chance to show he has what it takes to be a consistent playmaker.
Newton played college football at the University of Toledo from 2019 to 2024, appearing in 62 games for the Rockets. He caught 206 passes for 2,927 yards and scored 32 receiving touchdowns, also returning kicks and punts when called upon, and making plays in space.
