Josh Kelly is aiming to become the UK’s sixth reigning men’s world champion as he takes on ferocious IBF super welterweight champion Bakhram Murtazaliev.
The Russian (23-0) will attempt the second defence of his title at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena, where a partisan crowd is expected.
Murtazaliev dropped Tim Tszyu in an imperious victory in Orlando in October 2024 for a 17th stoppage win of his career. Kelly (17-1-1) will likely have to do things the hard way to claim the world belt he has long been tipped for since his days on the GB podium squad.
But the 31-year-old Adam Booth-trained fighter believes he is in his prime and his optimum division, having won seven bouts in succession since his damaging six-round loss to David Avanesyan in February 2021.
